Early Inspirations
Growing up in a tranquil seaside village in South Wales, Michael’s fashion journey began at home, under the careful guidance of his mother, who instilled in him the importance of individuality. Encouraging him to embrace uniqueness through clothing, she regularly took him on adventures across the country, discovering independent stores and boutiques that celebrated originality and craftsmanship. Her cherished advice—“be a shepherd, not a sheep”—became Michael’s guiding principle, laying the foundations for a life committed to authenticity and distinctive style.
Shaping a Creative Path
Initially drawn to architecture, Michael soon found traditional education restrictive. At the age of 20, driven by ambition and curiosity, he left Wales and moved to London, embracing the energy and opportunities of the city. With no formal training in fashion, he chose to immerse himself directly in luxury retail, securing his first position at Gucci. Over seven transformative years, he learned the intricate art of luxury service, meticulous detailing, and honed an eye for timeless elegance. Building a prestigious client base, Michael transitioned into personal styling, quickly becoming renowned for his intuitive creativity and extraordinary attention to detail. His reputation grew, capturing the attention of influential figures across the worlds of fashion, film, and music.
The Birth of W.Rubens
In 2020, amid the unprecedented global pause of COVID-19, Michael found himself without the usual demands of his thriving styling career. Reflecting deeply during this rare period of quiet, he revisited an idea that had lingered in his imagination for over six years—the simple yet profound concept of crafting the perfect white T-shirt.
His inspiration crystallised from repeated conversations with clients who continuously asked the same question: “Where can I find the best white T-shirt?” Michael realised he never had an adequate answer, and recognising a gap in the market, his vision for W.Rubens was born. Influenced by his lifelong passions for tailoring, culture, and sportswear, he spent that pivotal summer designing over 6,000 variations, meticulously refining each detail to create the quintessential white tee.
